Unit fire may have been deliberate, say police

A BASEMENT fire that forced almost 100 residents to be evacuated from a unit block in Sydney’s west may have been deliberately lit, police say.

A vehicle was found alight in the basement and residents were evacuated to a nearby RSL club while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

They are expected to be able to return to their homes later today.

A number of people, including several police officers, were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, while one officer was taken to hospital.

Police are now investigating the fire, which they believe may have been deliberately lit.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact Fairfield Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Fairfield Street is expected to remain closed for several hours while police examine the scene.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
