Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini successor rumored for late May, early June

April 18th, 2013 Technology / Science

Samsung is reportedly preparing even more Galaxy phones for launch in the immediate future, this time an update to last year’s Galaxy S3 Mini. Although the company hasn’t said anything about the devices yet, Dutch site TechTastic found a couple of new models buried on Samsung’s website and one is named just as you’d expect it to be if it was an S3 Mini refresh: the GT-I9190 and GT-I9195 (the S3 Mini is GT-I8190).

Obviously official information isn’t available yet, but the rumor mill’s consensus is that one will be called the S4 Mini (shocking) and the other will ship as the S4 Mini Duos. Both will take a hit in specs over the standard S4, but the former will be closer than the latter, packing a 4.3-inch 960×540 display, a quad-core processor and an 8MP camera, up from the S3 Mini’s a 480×800 screen, dual-core chip and 5MP camera.

The Mini Duos will at the very least have a weaker processor with half the cores of its sibling and it’s also said to be aimed at markets where dual-SIM functionality is heavily used. And that’s about all we think we know, though it’s safe to assume that both devices will have Android 4.2.2 with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. Black and white models are a given, but the S3 Mini has surfaced in red and floral print.

Pricing and availability are unavailable of course, but there’s no apparent reason why Samsung wouldn’t stick with the $ 400ish territory for the standard S4 Mini, which puts it a couple hundred bucks behind its full-powered counterpart. Common sense also suggests that the devices will be coming soon if they’re cropping up on Samsung’s site and many believe that the company is preparing for a late May, early June launch.
